It may be a literal hotspot, but Bikram Yoga Andersonville is darn easy to miss. Housed on the second floor of a
Clark Street warehouse space, the lack of any sign jutting onto the street might cause a head scratch or two, but you'll find it. Once you climb the gray stairs into the calm, meditative space, you'll completely forget how many times you biked up and down the street to get there.
Owner Jessica Rask opened this yoga studio in October 2008 after she returned from Amsterdam. Her small team teaches all of the 20 weekly classes, which cater to adults of all ages and abilities (not recommended for kids under 16). Each session runs 90 minutes, and you don't need reservations, but do come hydrated and with an open mind. Like any sport, don't eat two hours prior to class unless you're looking to revisit that food later.
Ready for the bikram challenge? Unlike other types of yoga, like hatha and ashtanga, the instructors turn up the heat for this one. Moving through the 26 asana series, bikram works muscles you didn't even know existed, warming and stretching them in the natural order.
Still not convinced? Before Rask started bikram yoga, she was clinically obese, with long-time chronic knee pain problems. She was also developing RSI in her wrist. It wasn't until she became involved in bikram that she was able to take control of her life, losing 40 pounds and ridding herself of her RSI and chronic keen pain. If that's not incentive, we're not sure what is.
