Second City

Seminal comedy troupe (39 years old on December 16, 1998) named after Chicago's identity complex spawned the definitive Saturday Night Life cast, as well as clubs in Toronto & Detroit, and elsewhere in the Chicago area (including the next-door Second City ETC). Alumni include Dan Ayckroyd, Alan Alda, John Belushi, John Candy, Chris Farley, Shelly Long, Gilda Radner, Martin Short, George Wendt, and even the voice of Homer Simpson (Dan Castellaneta).

The comedy revues (there have been eighty-some on the mainstage) skewer politicians and pop culture, mixing pre-honed stuff with a few bits of improv. The stale sketch-blackout-sketch format has been loosened considerably, regaining the city's comic crown. Tickets range from $6-16 -- you'll be hustled for food and drink before and during the show. The cast improvs post-show every night but Friday, which you can stay and watch for free... Or show up (free!) just for the improv...
