Famous Western and dramatic actor, best known for his TV role as the bumbling Sheriff Elroy P. Lobo in "B.J. and the Bear", was born in Nelson, GA on May 25, 1926. He was raised in Bedford, Indiana, and majored in theatre at Northwestern (graduated 1949). He appeared in many movies including Rio Bravo and How the West Was Won..

Akins died of cancer in 1994.
