Everyone knows the best comedy in Chicago can be found at Second City. But with a nearly $20 price tag, it's a bit steep. For just $5 to $15, you can catch the comedy stars of tomorrow today—for quite a bit less.
Almost every night of the week, different sketch and improv comedy groups have a go at performing for live audiences. To get there, go to Piper's Alley just as if you were catching the Mainstage show. Head upstairs, and just keep on going up and up until you can't go up anymore- the studio space is perched at the top of the building right next to the entrance to the Second City training center.
The space is a pretty bare bones black box, with chairs and tables on bleachers facing the small stage- shows can get pretty creative in their set design, or be done on a shoestring; it depends on the group doing a show there, and who they have to share the space with. The box office sells concessions, including beverages- this writer prefers to knock back a Mike's Hard Lemonade while watching the show.
